ORCIA WINE FESTIVAL

THE LAST WEEKEND IN APRILE

This event is organized by the town council, the Orcia wine Consortium in collaboration with the national organization of wine tasters (ONAV).
Wine tasting, food, well being and body treatment, hiking, music and images to tell the story of Orcia wine and the healthy thermal waters of the Val d’Orcia.
In San Quirico D'Orcia, beneath the seventeenth century frescoed ceilings of the splendid Palazzo Chigi the producers of Orcia wine offer their wines to be tasted and purchased.

THE OLIVE OIL FESTIVAL

THE FIRST WEEKEND IN DECEMBER, AROUND THE FEAST OF THE IMACULATE CONCEPTION 8th December

During this weekend before the Christmas festivities there is the excellent local new extra virgin olive oil on show.
You can find stands for tasting the oil as well as wine and other typical products all along the main San Quirico d'Orcia street's where folklore exhibitions also take place. A real explosion of flavors and aromas and popular traditions.

THE THIRD WEEKEND IN JUNE

This festival evokes the meeting between the Empire and the Pope’s ambassadors which changed the course of history. A real plunge into the past, one of the most suggestive and ancient historical reminders of the past among music, colors, flavors and emotions. The highlight of the program is on the final day when history is relived outside the parish church of the Collegiata of the village where Pope Adrian IV’s ambassadors meet the Emperor Federico Barbarossa. On the parade ground in the Horti Leonini, the four districts of San Quirico compete to win the Emperor’s Cup with archery and flag throwing competitions.

FORME NEL VERDE

FROM JULY TO SEPTEMBER

An international exhibition of modern sculpture born in 1971 and set in the Horti Leonini in San Quirico d’Orcia.
It began with Italian artists but now sculptors from all over the world come to bring each year samples of the best international sculpture.
During recent years the perfect geometric pattern of the gardens has been the show case for numerous exhibitions, both collective and personal. Great artists such as Manzù, Pomodoro, Rambaldi, and Cascella to cite some Italians or Roca-Rey, Brook, Spender, Gonzales, YoshinOgat, Kurt LaurenzMetzler, among foreign guests.

BRAVIO DELLE BOTTI

THE LAST SUNDAY IN AUGUST

The splendid panoramic medieval city of Montepulciano becomes the stage for this extraordinary exhibition. The "Bravio delle Botti" is an exciting race between the 8 quarters of the city which compete to win the “Bravio”, a painted cloth with a portrait of the patron saint of the city. The competitors must push and roll enormous wooden barrels for about one kilometer uphill through the narrow streets of the historic center. Each barrel is pushed by two strong men to the finishing line in the main square opposite the beautiful cathedral.

SAGRA DEL TORDO

LAST SUNDAY IN OCTOBER

Since 1958 on the last Sunday in October Montalcino has celebrated the Sagra del Tordo (the Festival of the Thrush).It is an event of a special flavor which takes place in this splendid town in the province of Siena; a rich program includes not only the chance to taste the famous roast thrushes but to watch the archery competition between the districts of Montalcino accompanied by a historical procession in magnificent medieval costumes bearing the colors of the four quarters, Borghetto (red and white), Pianello (blue and white), Ruga (yellow and blue) and Travaglio (red and yellow).

SECOND WEEKEND IN MAY

“Pienza and flowers” is a traditional appointment with exhibitions of plants and flowers along the streets of the town center. Numerous exhibitors are present from all over Italy.
Normally this event takes place together with the extraordinary opening of some gardens in Pienza, Radicofani, San Quirico d’Orcia and Chianciano Terme. In Pienza it is possible to visit the hanging gardens of Palazzo Piccolomini and Sant’Anna in Camprena; in Radicofani the public park Bosco Isabella; in San Quirico d’Orcia the Horti Leonini and the Rose Garden.
